ARTIST STATEMENT Andy Holyer is a figurative oil painter whose work is inspired by the people, places and history of the Romney Marsh and Dungeness I try to seek out the dramatic in my environment. I use vivid colours and dynamic composition to evoke the narratives and atmosphere of the Romney Marsh. Whilst I am native to this area for many years I lived in Yorkshire where I studied at Leeds university, Bretton Hall college [MA 1997 fine art] and was also a lecturer at Wakefield District College for ten years. I exhibited widely including solo exhibitions at Wakefield City Art Gallery, Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery, Newcastle and Sheffield universities amongst others. My work during this period was inspired by the post war social realist figurative and expressionist art movements that seemed appropriate to urban living in the industrial north. I was also studio assistant to John Bratby. Figurative painting is still central to my work but I now see myself as being more defined within the neo-romantic tradition. Freed from a perceived obligation to make social comment combined with a keen interest in my own cultural heritage I now enjoy painting in a more joyful, playful and entertaining manner." There is an ongoing exhibition of Andy's work at the Pilot Inn, Dungeness as well as independent art galleries and open studio events. Andy’s work is held in collections in the UK, USA, Australia and Germany.
